If you’ve popped the question only to get a surprise response from your own body, you’re not alone. According to experts, engagement boners are a real thing and more common than you might expect.

Over a certain age, you can expect your Instagram feed to be filled less with images from nights out where a social media post serves as the only memory, to those of the more romantic variety in which a ring is flashed with a sophisticated wave of the hand, cheeks wet from tears as a slideshow carousel displays the events leading up to the moment they said ‘yes’. The engagement post is something of a rite of passage for any couple that makes such a commitment, and while they vary in terms of location, extravagance, hilarity and setting, for some, the images are ruined entirely by a rather surprising revelation that has nothing to do with the recipient’s response. If you’ve seen or experienced it for yourself, you might know the shock that is the Engagement Boner. And as it turns out, it’s actually a thing.

You don’t need to be a fan of The Bachelor to understand that popping the question can be one of the most terrifying ordeals of a person’s life. From hiding the occasion from your potential partner to ensure they are at their most unsuspecting, to picking out the ring and coming up with the plan itself, there’s a lot riding on this one moment. And it seems the adrenaline rush mixed with endorphins proves to be the ultimate libido booster for men, who are popping out boners just as quickly as they are the words, “Will you marry me?”

When TikTok user Mariel Twist shared a now-viral video of her engagement, audiences were quick to point out the very prominent bulge appearing from her fiancé as he popped the question. While a badly timed erection can be a great source of embarrassment, there was something endearing about this occasion. As one user commented: “WHOSE HORSE IS THAT?” The erection may have stolen the show, but it left many curious about the whole thing and even led writer Priscilla Page to post in a Tweet: “Would honestly be pretty disappointed if I ever got a boner-free marriage proposal.”

So, just what is an engagement boner and why is it a thing? As Cosmopolitan reports, experts suggest that engagement boners are less a reflection of arousal as they are a “cocktail of physiological phenomena that just so happens, in some cases, to result in an erection.” As Gigi Engle, an expert for 3Fun, explained to the publication, “When we’re flooded with dopamine and adrenaline in high emotional states, erections can take place. It’s basically a reflexive response. Your brain sends a signal to the body to get ready for sexual activity because it misinterpreted the stimulation it received as sexual.”

To dispel any of the confusion, for men, the act of proposing itself can be so overwhelming from an emotional standpoint, that it confuses the brain with such high levels of excitement, which the body then responds to. Safe to say, if you find yourself gearing up for the big moment, don’t panic if the Engagement Boner happens to you – you’re not alone.
