Members of the National Panhellenic Council of Aiken sponsored a Men’s Health Fair in partnership with the Clyburn Center for Primary Care. The fair was held Jan. 28 at the Aiken Housing Authority. It’s goal was to raise awareness about the health of African American men and provide health screenings.
Screenings included hypertension, HIV and stress. Dr. Alan Mitchell, an internal medicine physician with the Clyburn Center, was the guest speaker. He spoke about heart disease, colon cancer and prostate cancer as well as the importance of preventative care.
Mitchell also is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
He was introduced by City Council member Gail Diggs, director of outreach and community services at the Clyburn Center and member of Sigma Gamma Rho.
Those who helped make the health fair a success include: Dr. Charlene Moore Peterson, president of the NPHC of Aiken and member of Zeta Phi Beta; Denise Long, vice president of NPHC of Aiken and member of Sigma Gamma Rho; Denise Long, program committee member; Cherell Butler, program chair and member of Delta Sigma Theta; Vivan Dicks, program committee member and member of Delta Sigma Theta.
The goal of the Men’s Health Fair was to raise awareness about the health of African American males and to provide screenings. Screening and testing were conducted in the area of Body Mass Index, hypertension, HIV and stress.
