When I was 25, I remember having this overwhelming feeling that absolutely everything was going wrong. I couldn’t catch a break in anything from my career to my personal life. I needed to do something major, so I booked myself an appointment at the hairdresser and got a haircut.
Yes, though cliche, a trip to the salon holds transformative power. It was only a haircut – but I felt like a new person, away from old worries and ready to take on this chapter of life.
From bad breakups to job losses, the humble haircut has been prescribed as a form of cure – a way to shed the old and prepare for the new. But now the new hair, new me vibe is reaching new heights thanks to what is being dubbed ‘energy haircuts’, promising to overhaul your emotional and mental wellbeing. But can a trim really heal your energy?
What is an energy haircut?
Formally known as trichothérapy, the practice was founded by Jill Andrieu, a former L’Oréal professional and Wella ambassador. Trichothérapy taps into the holistic methods and that’s what sets it apart from your normal haircut.
In ancient Greek, ‘Tricho’ means hair, and Trichotherapy embodies an energy hair-cutting technique that releases hair toxins, energises vital energy and stimulates the cranial meridians.
With only 400 trained Energetician hairdressers, Hari’s is one of the few hairdressers to offer the service in the UK. During 90 minutes and in three steps, an energy haircut promises to give you revitalising care for your hair, your body and your mind, all without any products. ‘It offers immediately a visible result of shine, volume and light to the transformed hair,’ explains Sabrina Picot, senior stylist at Hari’s.
New, luscious locks sounds incredible, but trichotherapy offers more than just the physical. The principle is centred around optimal health based on the understanding that our hair is tethered to our well-being well beyond appearance.
‘The essential question is: is our hair still healthy? Before answering this question, you have to understand what the hair goes through and its energetic capabilities,’ says Picot.
‘We must consider hair as an optical fibre. It’s an energetic receiver, an energetic sensor. The hair, in its growth mechanism, goes with the body in the detoxification processes. We also detoxify with our tears, sweat and urine. Unfortunately, when loaded with stress and toxins, hair loses its shine and vitality. The densification of energies contained in the hair impedes its capacity to receive, shine, and live with lightness. The hair reveals the mood of the person. It is the first to give us news on our state of health.’
How to feel brand new
The haircut starts with a craniosacral system therapy (CST) head massage, which has been reported to have healing benefits specific to both physical and emotional trauma. The act of stimulating the back of the head and the pineal gland gets the body ready for the detoxification process that comes with the haircut.
All the typical haircare products are forgone: there’s no lathering shampoo or sharp scissors, but instead just a Japanese sword called a Tantõ and a razor. At first glance, this looks quite scary (your hair is a bit too close to your head to be getting a sword near it, thank you), but I was told that Tantõ trims only the smallest amount of hair by skimming, rather than slaying.
‘Unlike scissors, where two blades cut the hair without causing any vibration, the Tantõ’s vibration is transmitted by the hair cuticle to the hair bulb. It resonates in the cranium and spreads through the cerebral hemispheres thanks to the cerebrospinal fluid, which transmits this vibratory frequency to the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems,’ explains Picot. ‘As soon as we cut the hair with the Tantõ, there is a release, and immediately, the hair is noticeably stronger, lighter and shinier.’
The Tantõ is also said to highlight energy restriction, in some places gliding easily while in others experiencing resistance. During my energy haircut, it hit resistance on the back right side of my hair, which Picot informed me was connected with my constant go-go-go and giving nature. Though it felt like some sort of mystical reading, most of what my hair told her about me was true: I am often caught up in the grind of work and have been guilty of not prioritising time for myself.
A lot of people may be wary of the efficiency of energy haircuts and disregard them as woo-woo. It’s important to note that it’s not presented as a method to cure trauma, but as a tool to supplement that journey and like most things in the realm of wellness, if it feels good for you, then surely that is good enough. Sure, I was left with a decent haircut but also a prescription to chill out and treat myself – and that’s got to be a good day at the hair salon.
