March 8 is International Women’s Day, and in addition to the campus events held as part of Women’s History Month, Stony Brook University was honored by having an esteemed faculty member recognized as an influential global economist.
Stephanie Kelton, a professor of economics and public policy in the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of five women featured by ET Edge Insights, an Economic Times media initiative, in its International Women’s Day post.
“American professor and economist Stephanie A. Kelton is a strong advocate of Modern Monetary Theory,” the publication stated. “She holds academic positions at Stony Brook University and the New School for Social Research’s Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis as a Senior Fellow. She previously held a faculty position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She was also the advisor to Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.”
Kelton was recognized along with Esther Duflo, professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Gita Gopinath, managing director of the International Monetary Fund; Rosie Rios, CEO of Red River Associates; and Christine Lagarde, a French politician and lawyer who has served as President of the European Central Bank since November 2019.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is #EmbraceEquity. The aim of the campaign theme is to get the world talking about why equal opportunities aren’t enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.

- Celebrating Women in STEM: Film Screening and Reception
A screening of the film Picture a Scientist at 10 a.m. at the Charles B. Wang Center, Lecture Hall 1, followed by a reception at 11 a.m. - Food and Social Justice – Making It, Using It, Sharing It
Part of the College of Arts and Sciences Sir Run Run Shaw Lecture Series, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Humanities Room 1006. Le Cordon Bleu-trained and Afro-Latina pastry chef Paola Velez will discuss her training and personal story as an Afro-Latina chef, the founding of Bakers Against Racism and her thoughts on food justice and using food for social justice. - The Pill: Film Screening and Open Lecture
Join professor Marci Lobel and her Psychology of Women’s Health (PSY 342) class for a viewing and discussion of the PBS film at 4:30 p.m. in Frey Hall Room 102. - Community Dialogue: The Supreme Court and Women’s Rights
The Center for Civic Justice hosts first of two community dialogues this semester at 7 p.m. in the Stony Brook Union Ballroom. This event will focus on critical Supreme Court cases that have impacted women’s health and how these decisions impact our students and community.
