Victoria’s alpine region is a must-visit for anyone who froths a mountain trek.
Just because it’s not snow season doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the country’s best alpine vibes year-round. Yep, those powder-dusted mountains minus the snow make for some pretty epic trekking during the warmer months, and if you froth a hike, crowd favourite Mt Hotham is calling your name.
With an altitude of 1861 metres, hiking Hotham in Victoria’s alpine region is a must for anyone who likes to play amongst the clouds, but if you’re unfamiliar with the area, forget about doing a trek on your lonesome. For anyone keen to tackle the mountain but so keen to do so solo, we’ve got good news – due to popular demand, Mt Hotham’s free guided walks are back – but it’s for one day only, on Saturday, March 18.
There are two walks to pick from on the day, both designed for more experienced hikers who are fit and able to handle a longer walk, but who also want some backup in the unfamiliar terrain. You can opt in for either the 11-12km sky-skimming Huts Walk, which will take you over the highest points of the Mt Hotham ski fields to touch those aforementioned clouds, followed by a dip down into Swindlers Valley (around 6.5 hours); or alternatively, traverse the history-laden Cobungra Ditch Walk via the West Access Track (9-10km/around 4.5 hours).
Both are beautiful options, where your guide will take you to incredible vistas and share their knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Plus, once you’ve worked up an appetite climbing the mountain, there’s a complimentary BBQ and drinks at the historic Silver Brumby Hut in the Mt Hotham resort afterwards. Winner.
Getting hike ready
Spaces are extremely limited for this one-day offer, so once you’ve booked your spot, be sure to make the most of it by putting in the prep work. For first-time hikers, check out our beginners guide to tackling the mountaintops and make sure your cardio fitness is up to scratch. Sort yourself the right gear (aka a pair of sturdy hiking shoes or boots and warm socks, comfy clothes and take along a warm jacket, because things can cool down quickly at high altitude). Heck, pack your survival kit too, if you want to, because it’s always good to be prepared.
Oh, and be sure to pack enough snacks in your backpack to keep you going for the duration of your walk. You might think that post-hike BBQ would be the last thing on your mind as you’re standing atop a mountain, looking down at some of Victoria’s most epic views, but a growling stomach will probably interrupt that whole serenity thing you’ve got going on.
