Sir Steve Redgrave has called for a men’s health minister to encourage more men to discuss the difficult subjects of mental health and age.
Speaking on this week’s Chopper’s Politics podcast, the Olympic great said “there probably should be [a men’s health minister], somebody that may have had issues themselves, that that can be related to.”
“Now, I’m pretty in tune with my body, being an athlete for 25 years. It took me 9 years to do something after the 2012 Olympics. And if it’s taken me 9 years to do something about my mental health and I’m reasonably in tune with my body, what does the general public do? That’s where the government has to step up.”
Sir Steve Redgrave has recently discovered that his low mood may be linked to being testosterone deficient. The condition is also linked to type 2 diabetes, which he discovered he had before his final Olympic gold in Athens in 2000.
“Literally a few weeks ago I was put on to boost my testosterone, and I’ve certainly seen an improvement in my mental health. I would like to see a little bit more improvement energy-wise, but it’s very early days at the moment!”
“So I would advise of of of certainly men of certain age to get your blood tested, your life could be enhanced.”
